Tony Stones

Tony Stones is Director and Principal Ecologist at TSA Ecology, which specialises in surveying, safeguarding and preserving natural habitats. He has worked in the environment and ecology sector for over 25 years. His experience includes 17 years in the construction industry for large, multidisciplinary consultancies (including on Nationally Significant Infrastucture Projects – NSIPs) and for smaller bespoke practices, as well as for non-governmental organisations (e.g. Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, Worldwide Fund for Nature), both in the UK and overseas. Tony has worked across a range of industry sectors, including the built environment, national infrastructure, geotechnical, highways, ports and harbours, renewables, water and oil and gas. Tony has particular expertise in ornithology and has contributed in many capacities – as consultant, adviser and assessor – throughout a wide-ranging and successful career.

Within the UK, TSA specialises in ecology project management and technical advice, drawing on over 25 years professional experience, habitat and species surveys (particularly Phase 1 Habitat surveys, birds, bats and reptiles), Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), BREEAM Assessments and construction site supervision. TSA provides specialist technical biodiversity inputs to international lenders’ projects overseas, chiefly in South-east Asia – most recently in Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia.

TSA Ecology is able to provide advice on the survey, mitigation and licensing requirements for a range of protected species including bats, dormice, badgers, reptiles, great crested newts, otters, water voles, as well as breeding and wintering birds. Within the UK, TSA Ecology is licensed to carry out barn owl and great crested newt survey work, and works with a network of Associates licensed to carry out other protected species work as required.

Based in London and Leeds, TSA Ecology works UK-wide and globally, particularly within south-east Asia and the Middle East. Tony has accumulated extensive experience within both the commercial and voluntary sector over the past 25 years, whilst working for a wide range of clients.
